The Nest Thermostat is popular in the US, unfortunately it is not available in the UK as yet as our heating systems work differently than our friends in the states.
Now a new company is launching an intelligent way to control your heating in the UK from your smartphone or tablet, Heat Genius.
The Heat Genius comes with a hub that your plug into your broadband router, and it also features radiator valves that are designed to replace your existing ones, there is also a sensor which can be used to separate your house into zones.
Although the Heat Genius system is powered by cutting edge smart technology behind the scenes, installation and operation is simple: just a box that plugs into your internet router, a wireless valve to slip onto each radiator and movement sensors for each room. These sensors help the device learn which times each room is normally used, so it can preheat rooms ready for these times and turn the radiators off the rest of the time.
The beauty of Heat Genius being an intelligent system is that it is “fit and forget”. Sure, you can tweak temperatures via a web interface or use the smartphone app to let it know you’re coming home early, but most of the time it just sits in the background, silently adjusting the heating to fit your changing lifestyle.
The Heat Genius will be available from tomorrow in the UK, the base station will set you back £250, then you will need a valve for each radiator which will set you back £50 and a sensor for each room which is £45.
This could end up being quite expensive if you want the system to control every room in your house, as you are looking at costs or around £100 per room plus the base station.
