Apple recently released their new iOS 12 software, one of the features is the software is support for more third party apps in Apple CarPlay, this includes more mapping apps, previously only Apple’s own maps was supported.
Now Google Maps is supported in CarPlay and Waze will also be adding support to Apple’s in car software in the future.

You down download the latest version of Google Maps over at the iTunes store, the software is available as a free download. You will need to have iOS 12 installed to use the maps software with CarPlay.
