Formula E has announced that it is launching a new driverless cars race series which will be called ROBORACE and the first race will take part during the 2016 to 2017 race season.
The races will take place before each Formula E Race, there will be a total of 10 teams and each will have two driverless cars.
The Vision Behind ROBORACE
Denis Sverdlov, Founder of Kinetik and ROBORACE, said: “We passionately believe that, in the future, all of the world’s vehicles will be assisted by AI and powered by electricity, thus improving the environment and road safety. ROBORACE is a celebration of revolutionary technology and innovation that humanity has achieved in that area so far. It’s a global platform to show that robotic technologies and AI can co-exist with us in real life. Thus, anyone who is at the edge of this transformation now has a platform to show the advantages of their driverless solutions and this shall push the development of the technology.”
ROBORACE aims to push the boundaries of autonomous driving technology. By providing a competitive platform, it encourages innovation and rapid advancements in AI and electric vehicle technology. The series will not only showcase the capabilities of driverless cars but also serve as a testing ground for new technologies that could eventually make their way into consumer vehicles.
Technical and Competitive Aspects
Each of the 10 teams participating in ROBORACE will have two driverless cars, making for a total of 20 cars on the track. These cars will be equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, cameras, and AI algorithms to navigate the racecourse. The teams will compete not just on speed but also on the efficiency and intelligence of their AI systems. This adds a unique layer of strategy to the races, as teams must optimize their algorithms to handle various racing conditions.
The cars will be powered by electric motors, aligning with Formula E’s commitment to promoting sustainable and eco-friendly technologies. The use of electric powertrains ensures that the races are not only exciting but also environmentally responsible.
Implications for the Future
The introduction of ROBORACE has significant implications for the future of both motorsports and everyday driving. By demonstrating the capabilities of AI and electric vehicles in a high-stakes environment, ROBORACE could accelerate the adoption of these technologies in mainstream automotive markets. The lessons learned from these races could lead to improvements in autonomous driving systems, making them safer and more reliable for everyday use.
Moreover, ROBORACE provides a unique opportunity for companies and researchers to test their technologies in real-world conditions. This could lead to faster development cycles and more robust solutions, ultimately benefiting consumers and society as a whole.
