The car you see here is the ride police departments around the US will be rolling around in. It’s called the 2020 Police Interceptor Utility, and it comes standard with a hybrid all-wheel-drive powertrain. The hybrid powertrain promises to save police agencies and taxpayers as much as $5,700 annually per vehicle in fuel costs over the current Police Interceptor Utility.
The vehicle is projected to have fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg combined, an improvement of 41% compared to current 3.7L gas-powered Police Interceptor Utility vehicles. Despite being a hybrid, the vehicle is still very much up to the task of chasing down criminals.
Testing by the Michigan State Police found that the new Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid has the fastest 0-100 mph acceleration, fastest lap, fastest average lap, and highest top speed of 137mph versus the competing police utility vehicles tested. Some of those had V8 engines under the hood. The only vehicle faster was the standard 3.0L EcoBoost Ford Police Interceptor Utility.
