Lots of families around the world use an SUV because they need space for people and cargo. The Ford Expedition is one of the few full-size SUVs left out there. Ford has announced that it has a new version of the Expedition that people who want a full-size SUV and want some off-road capability will appreciate. The 2018 Expedition FX4 claims to be the most off-road capable Expedition ever made.
Enhanced Off-Road Capabilities
The FX4 brings tech and 4×4 hardware to the mix that allows the Expedition to operate on trails and unpaved surfaces with more skill than previously available. The FX4 package includes off-road tuned shocks, an electronic limited slip rear diff, skid plates, side steps, and FX4 badging. These enhancements are designed to provide better traction and stability on rough terrains, making it easier for drivers to navigate challenging environments.
The off-road tuned shocks are particularly noteworthy as they help absorb the impact from uneven surfaces, ensuring a smoother ride. The electronic limited slip rear differential improves the vehicle’s ability to maintain traction by distributing power to the wheels that need it most. Skid plates protect the undercarriage from potential damage caused by rocks and debris, while the side steps make it easier to enter and exit the vehicle, especially when parked on uneven ground.
Advanced Terrain Management System
The FX4 also gets a new Terrain Management System that lets the driver select modes to optimize driving dynamics. This system includes multiple settings such as Normal, Sport, Tow/Haul, Eco, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Sand, and Mud/Rut. Each mode adjusts the vehicle’s throttle response, transmission shifting, and traction control to suit the specific driving conditions. For example, the Sand mode increases wheel spin to help the vehicle maintain momentum on loose surfaces, while the Mud/Rut mode enhances traction to prevent the wheels from getting stuck.
Ford says that the new FX4 will appeal to the over 20% of Expedition owners that use the SUV off-road. This statistic highlights the growing demand for vehicles that can handle both everyday driving and adventurous excursions. The truck also comes with rubber floor liners to prevent mud, sand, and water from fouling the interior. These liners are easy to clean and help maintain the vehicle’s interior in pristine condition, even after a day of off-roading.
Additional features that enhance the FX4’s off-road capabilities include hill descent control, which automatically applies the brakes to maintain a steady speed when descending steep slopes, and a high ground clearance that allows the vehicle to navigate over obstacles without getting stuck. The FX4’s robust construction and advanced technology make it a versatile choice for families who enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and fishing.
The Expedition FX4 will go on sale this fall with pricing unannounced. Given the extensive list of features and capabilities, it is expected to be competitively priced within the full-size SUV market. Potential buyers can look forward to a vehicle that combines the spaciousness and comfort of a family SUV with the ruggedness and durability needed for off-road adventures.
