Elio Motors is at the LA Auto Show showing off its latest prototype fuel sipper called the P5. The P5 prototype is claimed to get 84 MPG on the highway and is targeting a price of only $6,800 when it hits the market. The car certainly has quirky styling in a way that makes the Nissan Juke look downright normal.
To get such high fuel economy the Elio P5 is a very small and lightweight car with only three wheels. Power comes from a tiny 0.9-liter 3-cylinder engine that is made specifically for Elio by an engine developer called IAV. The car claims to reach 60mph in 9.6 seconds, which isn’t that bad for a fuel-sipping car. The top speed is said to be 100mph.
That is definitely fast enough to handle some of the roads around Texas with 75mph or higher speed limits. The P5 has been tweaked on the inside with an improved instrument panel and seat that provides more headroom and foam for comfort. The iPad holder inside the car was improved and the A-pillar shape was changed to be less intrusive. It’s unclear when the car will go into production.
