If, like me, you are eagerly anticipating the launch of the new Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim game, you might be thrilled to know that the first 20 minutes or so of the game have now been leaked in two videos. These videos reveal the entire introductory sequence, including character creation. So, if you don’t want the start of the game spoiled, look away now.
The original videos posted to YouTube have been removed, so we will have to see how long these remain before being pulled. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be landing on November 11th on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
Skyrim’s main story revolves around the player character’s efforts to defeat a dragon god who is prophesied to destroy the world. Set two hundred years after Oblivion, the game takes place in the land of Skyrim in the midst of a civil war after the assassination of the king.
Character Creation and Gameplay
One of the most exciting aspects of Skyrim is its detailed character creation system. Players can choose from a variety of races, each with unique abilities and traits. Whether you prefer the stealthy Khajiit, the magical High Elves, or the hardy Nords, Skyrim offers a rich selection of characters to suit your playstyle. The character creation process is not just about aesthetics; it significantly impacts gameplay, as different races have different strengths and weaknesses.
The gameplay itself is expansive and immersive. Skyrim features a vast open world filled with quests, dungeons, and a dynamic ecosystem. The game introduces a new mechanic called “Radiant Story,” which dynamically alters quests based on your actions. This means that no two playthroughs are exactly the same, adding a layer of replayability that is rare in RPGs.
Combat and Magic Systems
Skyrim’s combat system has been significantly overhauled from its predecessors. Players can now dual-wield weapons and spells, allowing for a more versatile combat experience. The game also introduces “Shouts,” powerful abilities that can turn the tide of battle. These Shouts are learned by discovering ancient words of power scattered throughout the land, adding an element of exploration to character progression.
Magic in Skyrim is equally diverse, with five schools of magic to master: Destruction, Restoration, Illusion, Conjuration, and Alteration. Each school offers a range of spells that can be used in combat or to solve puzzles. For example, Destruction spells are primarily offensive, dealing damage to enemies, while Restoration spells can heal you and your allies.
Graphics and Sound
The graphics in Skyrim are nothing short of breathtaking. The game features a fully realized world with dynamic weather, day-night cycles, and stunning landscapes. From snow-capped mountains to lush forests, the attention to detail is evident in every corner of the game. The character models and animations have also been significantly improved, making interactions more lifelike.
The sound design in Skyrim is equally impressive. The game features a fully orchestrated soundtrack composed by Jeremy Soule, known for his work on previous Elder Scrolls games. The ambient sounds, voice acting, and sound effects all contribute to the immersive experience, making you feel like you are truly part of the world of Skyrim.
