Chevrolet is taking some time to brag about the transmission that you can get in the 2017 Camaro ZL1 aimed at track day enthusiasts. You can get a manual transmission in the car and you can get the new 10-speed automatic with paddle shifts. Chevy claims that its paddle shift 10-speed can shift faster than the dual clutch PDK that Porsche uses.
Chevy says that the 1-2 upshifts is 36% faster than the PDK with the 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts 27% and 26% quicker respectively. “You touch the paddle and the gear changes with immediacy,” said Aaron Link, ZL1 lead development engineer. “The shifts happen so quickly and without delay that it almost feels like an extension of your reflexes. It’s a much more involving experience for the driver that really helps improve confidence and performance on the track.”
Not only is the transmission fast to shift gears, but it also has a lower top ratio than the old 8-speed auto allowing for more fuel efficiency on the highway. The transmission also boasts a reduction in spin losses with only two non-applied clutches. A special low viscosity transmission fluid is used and an advanced torque converter.
