I have been a fan of Alfa Romeo since the little drop top Spider was in the film Fletch in the ’80s. The coolest car they have right now to me is the sexy and impractical 4C. A disturbing report is going around that Alfa Romeo plans to discontinue the 4C by 2020. That is only a few years away.
The reason cited along with this report is poor sales of the 4C. Low sales of this niche sports car are really no surprise; it’s not a practical little car. So far this year only 309 units have been sold, a decline of 3% compared to last year. Even at the higher number of sales last year by mid-year Alfa had sold only 320 cars.
I am holding out hope that this is a false rumor and if it turns out to be true, perhaps Alfa will sell off the remaining 4Cs at a discount to shed the inventory. With the sales so poor for the 4C in the US, we have to wonder if the Alfa Romeo Giulia will fare better when it launched here later this year.
