Chevy has unveiled the 2017 Camaro ZL1, which is based on the all-new 6th generation Camaro. This new iteration is lighter, offers better handling, and delivers more performance than its predecessors. The 2017 Camaro ZL1 claims improved levels of technology, refinement, track capability, and acceleration. Much of this enhanced performance comes from the new supercharged LT4 6.2L V8 engine, which produces an impressive 640hp and 640 lb-ft of torque.
Advanced Transmission Options
The powerful LT4 engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a new 10-speed automatic transmission equipped with paddle shifters. The 10-speed automatic transmission is a significant advancement, designed to provide quick and smooth gear changes, enhancing both performance and fuel efficiency. This transmission is engineered to optimize the power delivery from the supercharged V8, ensuring that drivers can harness the full potential of the engine whether on the track or the open road.
Enhanced Performance Features
ZL1 buyers also benefit from a suite of advanced performance features. The Magnetic Ride suspension system adjusts the damping of the shocks in real-time, providing a balance between comfort and performance. The electronic limited-slip differential (LSD) ensures optimal power distribution to the rear wheels, enhancing traction and stability during aggressive driving. Additionally, the dual-mode exhaust system allows drivers to switch between a quieter exhaust note for daily driving and a more aggressive sound for spirited driving.
The performance traction management system and launch control are designed to help drivers achieve the best possible acceleration from a standstill. These systems work together to manage wheel spin and optimize traction, making it easier to launch the car quickly and efficiently.
The new V8 engine in the 2017 Camaro ZL1 makes 60 more horsepower and 80 lb-ft of torque more than its predecessor, providing a significant boost in performance. This increase in power translates to faster acceleration times and improved overall driving dynamics.
The car is also fitted with unique 20-inch forged wheels wrapped in Eagle F1 supercar tires, which provide excellent grip and handling. Brembo brakes with six-piston front calipers and 15.35-inch two-piece front rotors are standard, offering exceptional stopping power and fade resistance. These high-performance brakes are essential for a car with the capabilities of the ZL1, ensuring that it can slow down as quickly as it accelerates.
Inside the car, Recaro seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel are standard, providing both comfort and support during spirited driving. The Recaro seats are designed to keep the driver and passengers securely in place, even during high-speed cornering. The flat-bottom steering wheel not only looks sporty but also provides better legroom and easier ingress and egress.
Chevy has also spent a considerable amount of time in the wind tunnel with the 2017 Camaro ZL1 to optimize its aerodynamics. The car features a number of aerodynamic enhancements, including a front splitter, a rear spoiler, and side skirts, all designed to reduce drag and increase downforce. These improvements help the ZL1 stay planted at high speeds and improve its overall stability.
To keep the engine and other components cool during track use, the Camaro ZL1 is equipped with ten heat exchangers. These heat exchangers are strategically placed to ensure that the car can maintain optimal operating temperatures, even under the most demanding conditions.
For those who want to capture their driving experiences, the Chevy Performance Data Recorder is available as an option. This system allows drivers to record video and data from their track sessions, providing valuable feedback and the ability to analyze their performance.
