Ford has announced a new mode that is available on the 2015 F-150 that has apparently been there all along but had not been announced. The new mode is a Sport Mode that is available with any engine option. Sport Mode is something borrowed from the Mustang that has been offered there for a long time. Sport Mode is activated in the 2015 F-150 by pressing the tow/haul button two times.
When activated correctly, an amber S appears in the lower right side of the tach to indicate the mode is active. Sport Mode changes the frequency of gearshifts to hold the truck I its peak torque band more of the time. It also keeps the truck from shifting as much focusing on performance rather than efficiency.
Sport mode comes thanks to the fact that the transmission tech for the F-150 and the Mustang was developed jointly. This allowed the engineers to port Sport Mode easily to the F-150. Sport Mode can be activated in 2WD mode, 4WD automatic, and 4WD high settings. That means no Sport Mode on 4WD F-150 trucks in 4WD Lo range. The big feature of the 2015 F-150 truck is the move to aluminum body panels shaving 700 pounds.
