After YouTube’s announcement last month that it intends to spend “hundreds of millions” on original content for Red, it has just unveiled plans for a YouTube-made movie that will also be released in theaters. They even have a serious actress attached: Susan Sarandon. They were very serious about spending the money.
The film is called Vulture Club, and it is already in post-production. Susan Sarandon is an emergency room nurse whose son has been kidnapped by terrorists, and after getting no help from the government finds help in the unlikeliest of places. It also stars Edie Falco of The Sopranos and Matt Bomer of Magic Mike, and is directed by Maryam Keshavarz, of Circumstance. Sounds like an interesting thriller.
Details on YouTube’s plans to actually get the movie into theaters are unclear. A representative from YouTube Red says, “We don’t have any news to report on a theatrical partner at this stage. Perhaps later once we identify a partner.” It sounds like they are shopping around.
Vulture Club is a very different kind of movie compared to YouTube Red’s other recent acquisitions, like Eminem’s satirical hip-hop drama Bodied and Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me 2: Holy ChIcken! This is a thriller featuring a huge star. It could give YouTube Red a boast over rival Amazon Studios. We will know more soon.
