There aren’t many options for streaming video on the Switch. There’s Niconico in Japan and Hulu, but that’s about it. Another option might be coming, though. In the wake of hints from this spring, people searching Nintendo’s website for games have received suggestions for a Switch-native YouTube app that would be available November 8th.
Right now there is no product page for it, but the listing by itself seems to say it all. An imminent app release is likely on the way. I mean, Google is still determined to make YouTube available everywhere, and Nintendo is no stranger to YouTube apps on systems like the 3DS and Wii U. So naturally, it is coming. It makea sense to release the app on a touchscreen console that’s practically made for it right?
If the listing is accurate this is a big deal for Nintendo’s console. The device has never really been a real media player, but that might change with YouTube available. Many people already have YouTube on phones or tablets, but many kids don’t. So this might be an easy way for young ones who want to both watch and play games on one system to do so. Stay tuned.
