If you’ve been to an electronics retailer like Best Buy, you’ve probably seen stacks of Xbox One bundles throughout the store. Microsoft says that this has helped them boost sales lately. In fact Xbox marketing chief Yusef Mehdi on the Xbox blog, said that Microsoft’s console has moved a massive quantity of units. Almost 10 million. With the special price of $350, Xbox says they’ve been shipping more units than ever now. This is good news since we are headed into the holiday sales season, but Playstation has already beaten them to this milestone, so this is really nothing to brag about.
Microsoft is fudging the numbers a bit too, disguising shipments as sales in the blog post, saying they’ve “sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles”. In most sell-in agreements, retailers can sell those items back to the OEM, so this announcement is already called into question.
Playstation hit this milestone around July of this year, so even though more sales help, Xbox One is still well behind the competition. Last we heard, Sony had shipped nearly 14 million units to retailers. Again, not sales, but it gives us a good idea how far ahead they are. These holiday sales will be interesting to watch.
