Microsoft announced support for Xbox One crossplay at the E3 gaming convention last year, but it seems like Sony hasn’t been very open to the idea so Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners aren’t able to play each other online.
It has been a bummer. Things may be changing now though with Epic’s co-op survival game Fortnite. The title has been updated to enable Xbox One and PS4 players to crossplay. At least on this title.
Sony hasn’t been very receptive to the crossplay idea since Microsoft started talking about it last year. It decided against enabling crossplay for both Minecraft and Rocket League even though Microsoft and Nintendo are supporting it across PC, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. We aren’t sure why. Neither Microsoft nor Sony have confirmed that they’re supporting this. It seems to indicate that they may be willing to see how it goes with this title. Or maybe it is a glitch.
Reddit users first reported that Fortnite players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can play against each other online. However, there’s no statement from Sony or Epic Games on this matter. Hopefully, they will clarify what is going on here very soon. We would all like to know if this can be expected from additional titles soon.
