Earlier this week Microsoft started rolling out the latest update to the Xbox 360 menu interface, the Dashboard. One of the big new things is an Internet Explorer app for surfing the Internet and accessing browser-based online services. But if you have applied the update, you’ll notice that IE has come at a cost of some other popular apps.
Microsoft decided to remove both the Twitter and Facebook apps that were previously available from the Xbox Marketplace. They gave no reason, but many think it is to encourage use of Internet Explorer. Both Twitter and Facebook are setup to work through a browser interface, so that does make sense, but it seems like a silly move from Microsoft.
If you already had the Twitter and Facebook apps installed, they won’t disappear with the update and you can continue to use them. It’s just new users who are out of luck. Sorry guys.
