The World of Warcraft is not what it used to be, at least as far as the number of subscribers are concerned. In it’s prime it had about 12 million active subscribers. You would expect that they would lose a lot of people over time. I mean there are so many cool games for gamers to play after all.
When we last heard the numbers, the number of active subscribers was around 8.3 million but according to a new report during Blizzard’s Q3 2013 earnings call, it was revealed that World of Warcraft’s subscribers have dropped even further and now sits at 7.6 million. That is a loss of around 700,000 subscribers in just 6-7 months. The game is 9 years old. So not surprising.
The thing is, if they want to keep milking this cash cow, they had better start the trend in the opposite direction and soon. At this rate, they will soon not have enough players to make it worth their while. They must have something up their sleeve. We will have to wait and see what that could be. Maybe the upcoming expansion, Warlords of Draenor will help them get some gamers back into the realm.
