If you have been wondering what’s new in Windows 8 but just haven’t got time to sit and watch the entire Microsoft Keynote presentation, the Lifehacker website has created a great video that shows you everything you need to know about Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system and its features in just 8 minutes. Watch the cut-down presentation after the jump.
Key Features of Windows 8
Windows 8 introduces a variety of new features and improvements over its predecessors. One of the most notable changes is the introduction of the Start Screen, which replaces the traditional Start Menu. This new interface is designed with touchscreens in mind, featuring live tiles that provide real-time updates from your apps. This makes it easier to stay informed and connected without having to open each application individually.
Another significant addition is the Windows Store, which allows users to download and install apps directly from a centralized location. This is similar to app stores found on mobile devices, making it easier to find and install software. The Windows Store also ensures that all apps meet certain quality and security standards, providing a safer experience for users.
Windows 8 also includes improvements to performance and security. The operating system boots up faster than previous versions, thanks to a new hybrid boot mode that combines traditional shutdown and hibernation processes. Additionally, Windows Defender has been enhanced to provide better protection against malware and other security threats.
Enhanced Multitasking and Connectivity
Multitasking has been significantly improved in Windows 8. The new Snap feature allows users to run two apps side by side, making it easier to switch between tasks and manage multiple applications simultaneously. This is particularly useful for users who need to reference information from one app while working in another.
Connectivity has also been enhanced in Windows 8. The operating system includes built-in support for cloud services, allowing users to sync their settings and files across multiple devices. This means you can start working on a document on your desktop and continue where you left off on your tablet or smartphone. The integration with Microsoft’s SkyDrive (now OneDrive) makes it easy to store and access your files from anywhere.
Microsoft has also now made available a Windows 8 Developer Preview of their new Windows 8 operating system, which you can now download Windows 8 and install without the need for any activation.
