Vizio has some big news for CES 2019. It’s the reveal of SmartCast 3.0. This edition of its smart TV platform has a big addition: support for Apple AirPlay 2, plus enhancements for tie-ins with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
You’ll be happy to know that the new software is coming to all SmartCast TVs eventually, but first, they have to have a beta test in Q1 of this year before rolling out more widely in Q2. It will support AirPlay features like you’ve seen on Apple TV for instance, including multiroom audio, screen mirroring and streaming music from your iTunes library. Vizio hasn’t announced an iTunes app like Samsung that will work on its own to pull in TV shows and movies. Support for HomeKit allows for smart home control of the TV from your Apple devices and lets it respond to commands made via Siri. Vizio users are going to love this.
However, not all of these additions are for Apple products. SmartCast 3.0 also strengthens its connection with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Google Assistant can launch apps, control playback, and bring playback controls to a Google Home Hub. Control via Alexa gives you the ability to launch apps with Amazon’s smart assistant. That should arrive later in the year.
