Most of us know Steam as a gaming platform, but over the years it has also become a place for video as well. It has had its own documentaries and even offered major Hollywood releases, but that is coming to an end. So if you actually use this portion of Steam, this might be sad news for you.
Today Valve announced that it’s going to “refocus.” According to a recent blog post, it has retired the Video section of the Steam Store menu and said that over the next several weeks, non-game related content will also leave so that these things are no longer available for purchase. However, if you did buy a movie or video from Steam, you’ll be able to watch it just like you did before.
There will still be videos on Steam, however they’ll be associated with games and can be found under those games’ pages or via search. There will be nothing that is not game related. The idea is clearly to re-evaluate its efforts and focus on what gamers want and use the most. And that would be games and game-related content. Obviously, this makes sense. Focus on your core audience and keep it simple.
