There are many ways for an attacker to break into your computer. We have to worry about unknown discs, USB sticks and also attacks via the internet. Well, the latest in crowdfunding campaigns wants to focus on USB ports. After all, an attacker could steal information off of your PC via a USB flash drive. So why not just kill that USB Port so that you know you will be safe. Seems like a crazy option to me.
The team behind “USB Killer” seems to think it is a good solution. They’re looking for $10,000 in crowdfunding for a USB dongle which you plug into your PC to damage it. Yeah. It’s crazy. The dongle will fry the USB port and they also point out that their product may end up damaging your motherboard, causing permanent damage to it. Gee, thanks.
What do you think? Do you want to give it a go? They point out a scenario where this product would be useful in a home or office break-in. Burglars have invaded and “they see an innocuous-looking USB drive next to your computer and hope to gain access to its data. However, it’s not an ordinary flash stick. After inserting USB Killer into the computer the USB port is burned out, protecting you and your information.”
Um. Okay. This is basically a consumer-version of a USB frying dongle that has already been around for awhile now. I say just take precautions and be safe. No need to kill your computer. If you do want this, it is on Indiegogo right now and a pledge $99 will get you one.
