Snapchat is launching a new Snapchat Lens with musician Ariana Grande that will let fans try on her merchandise before buying it. This lens coincides with the launch of Grande’s latest album, Sweetener. Fans will be able to try on the Sweetener-branded merchandise via the Lens.
The merch in question is a face mask. If you like what you see, just tap the “Shop” button and you can buy the merchandise directly for $20, which also includes presale tickets to Grande’s 2019 tour, and if you’re in the US, you will also be given a link to download the album.
Snapchat’s collaboration with Grande is another instance of AR being used to help people see what products would look like on the customer. This tactic has proven very useful for shopping. Snapchat and Grande aren’t the first to use AR for virtual shopping.
Amazon has used AR to help customers check out products before buying them as well, and IKEA launched an AR app that let shoppers place virtual furniture in their homes so that they can get an idea of fit and color-matching before purchasing. It is a winning formula for more sales. Who knows where this technology will show up next.
