There have been rumors that the new Nintendo NX may use cartridges instead of disks. A patent filing from last year seems to reinforce that the upcoming Nintendo NX won’t have an optical drive at all.
This is more evidence that the new system will be all about old school cartridges. Not proof, but things are looking old school.
According to a recent trademark filing for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it reads, “Downloadable electronic game programs; downloadable electronic video game software; electronic game programs; electronic game software; video game cartridges; video game discs; video game memory cards; video game programs; video game software”.
You’ll notice that it says “video game cartridges” in the filing alongside video game discs and memory cards. Now it is possible that Nintendo is just simply covering their bases when it comes to the distribution of their games. We know that the Wii U accepted discs, so we can guess the “game discs” portion is probably for the Wii U. Whatever the case, it is interesting that cartridges are included.
Take it with a grain of salt for now, since nothing about the NX has been confirmed yet, but with details are expected this coming fall. We will know soon.
