Our smartphones still suffer scratches, even with Gorilla Glass. You can use a screen protector, but they need replacing. Now we have a new weapon in the war against scratches, from Japanese company Toray. It’s a self-repairing film.
This technology isn’t new. the company has been offering it as a decorative solution for laptop casings, but now this self-repairing touchscreen film is on its way to market for phones. At room temperature the film can repair minor scratches in just 10 seconds. It is also very flexible, so it won’t crack or peel, while still allowing 90% of light to pass through it.
But will it last long? Well, tests have shown no degradation in performance after 20,000 scratch repairs. That’s pretty impressive. It won’t be long until we can use it to keep our screens looking nice and new.
