Look what we have here. SamMobile is confirming the existence of the Gear VR, a virtual reality device that Samsung will debut alongside the Galaxy Note 4 at IFA 2014 in September. So this is our first look at the device. It is not a standalone device. By that, I mean that the Gear VR will have a dock that users can plug their Galaxy devices into via a USB 3.0 cable. It will use the inserted smartphone’s accelerometer, gyroscope and processing power to give the headset the ability to track the user’s head, simulating virtual reality without using built-in sensors of its own.
This will certainly insure that Samsung’s model will require a less assembly. That in turn will cut down on the cost of the headset, although the Gear VR is said to have a touchpad to navigate the interface and a see-through button which allows users to see the world through the rear cameras on their phones. It will hopefully be affordable.
As you have probably heard by now, Samsung will be the developing the hardware, while Oculus VR will develope software for the Gear VR. I can imagine that there will be lots of gaming apps as well as preloaded Samsung Apps. Who is looking forward to the Gear VR?
