Are you fed up with discs? Games might be cheaper if a console goes disc-less, saving costs on packaging, printing, and burning. We could just download games. Well, as you know, Microsoft decided to go with Blu-ray for the new Xbox One, but at one point the company considered going disc-less.
Speaking to the official Xbox magazine for the UK, Microsoft Studio’s Phil Spencer revealed the news. They were still undecided as of mid-2013. Spencer says, “There was a real discussion about whether we should have an optical disc drive in Xbox One […] we could get away with a purely disc-less console, but when you start looking at bandwidth and game size, it does create issues.”
That’s kind of funny when you consider that when the console was announced and the always-on internet requirements and the DRMs were revealed, gamers did not like that one bit and Microsoft had to backtrack on those policies. They would not have liked having to download all games, or being unable to play the latest game because you had no connection. It looks like they made the right call.
