These days most games and software are offered digitally. Many computer makers sell computers without an optical drive even. But when it comes to consoles, discs are still very much needed.
However Nintendo might be bucking this trend by launching the Nintendo NX without an optical drive. According to Japanese financial website Money-Link, this is what will happen. Instead of CDs, they will go back to a cartridge or game card system similar to the Nintendo 3DS handheld console.
Money-Link claims that this is based on ROM chip maker Macronix’s comments that they are expecting a bumper period of growth around the same time that Nintendo launches the NX. That would be March 2017. If this rumor is true, it would be an odd choice for Nintendo, but a very bold one as well.
It should be noted that this isn’t the first time it has been rumored that the NX could be dropping optical disc storage. Last year there was a patent that hinted at such a move, but I guess we will all have to wait and see. We don’t know anything for sure at the moment. It is an interesting idea for sure. If we hear more, we will let you know.
