The NES Classic Outsold Both The PS4 and Xbox One In June

Nintendo had initially decided to discontinue the NES Classic console which was selling very well. This confused fans and later the company sort of backtracked when they announced that they would be bringing it back.

It seems like that was a great idea because according to a report from the NPD Group, the NES Classic continues to be a huge hit and has outsold current consoles like Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One for the month of June. This is the first time a Nintendo console has led in monthly unit sales since the NPD began tracking the figures back in 1995, so it’s a big deal.

The NPD Group’s analyst Mat Piscatella also suggests that dollar sales on hardware were driven by the NES and SNES Classic. “Xbox One hardware dollar sales nearly doubled in June 2018 when compared to a year ago, while Switch sales jumped over 50 percent. PlayStation 4 hardware dollar sales were also higher. Dollar sales of all other hardware grew more than 23 times in the month when compared to a year ago, driven by sales of plug-and-play devices like the NES Classic and the Super Nintendo Classic.”

Word is that Nintendo may be readying another “Classic” console release with the N64 Classic. Nintendo has not yet officially announced anything but they would be fools not to.
