It looks like Taika Waititi, who directed Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, won’t be directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3. He has himself confirmed that the project, which has been on hold since director James Gunn was fired, will not have him behind the camera. He called it “James’ film.”
There were rumors that he was a leading candidate to replace James Gunn on the project. Disney and Marvel Studios fired James Gunn in July of last year after some offensive tweets resurfaced. The movie’s cast tried to get Marvel and Disney to reconsider but they would not.
Waititi commented on this at the Television Critics Association today, saying that he wouldn’t feel right taking over a movie that had been Gunn’s from start to finish. “Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, it would feel like going into someone’s house and saying, ‘Hey, I’m your new dad,’” Waititi said.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will hopefully happen soon, but when it does, Waititi won’t be involved. Gunn is reportedly going to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 in the meantime. Who will direct it? We will find out eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later. The fans are waiting.
