There are a few ways you can pay for your drinks at Starbucks, aside from using cash or your credit card. There is the Starbucks app and Apple Pay, for instance. But in Japan, Starbucks has a new way of paying for your drinks by using a specially-created pen.
The pen looks like a plain old ordinary pen, but it contains the same tech used by the Starbucks card so you can just tap it at any of the Starbucks IC card touchpads and it will register your payment and pay. Basically it has NFC built into it, but instead of a card, it comes in pen form.
The design of the pen is meant to look like a coffee machine. This device was created in collaboration with Zebra, a stationary supplier, and instead of blue or black ink, it will have brown ink. You know, the color of coffee.
The pens themselves are not cheap and are priced at around $50, but the upside is that it comes with 1,000 yen worth of credit which you can use towards your Starbucks purchases. Japan always gets the cool stuff while the rest of us are left wanting the things that they have.
