We see it everywhere.People walking off cliffs, walking in front of cars, trains, walking into poles. All because they are so fixated on their smartphones. For some people, it becomes more important than their very life. Well, South korea has a plan to help people pay attention to where they are going.
Seoul thinks there’s a simple answer that will help. Traffic signs. The South Korean capital is testing signs that warn smartphone owners in five accident-prone areas (such as City Hall or Gangnam Station) about the perils of distracted walking. Hopefully, these reminders will have you looking up more often. You know, so you don’t die.
If it does well in these areas, the trial will expand. If they work at all. If people are glued to their phones, they may not even see these signs. Maybe an audio warning would be better. South Korea is particularly obsessed with smartphones, given that both LG and Samsung call that country home. Maybe these reminders will help. Maybe they won’t. At the end of the day, if people value their smartphone use over their lives, what can you really do? I would go with audio to get their attention. We will see if it works.
