When Sony announced the PS4 Pro, they also revealed that they would not be leaving PS4 gamers behind as they will be issuing updates to the PS4 with HDR functionality. This is great news for gamers who have no intention of upgrading to the latest and greatest.
The good news is that it looks like the rumors of Sony possibly charging for the patch is not true. This news comes from a report from Polygon who has confirmed with Sony that the company “will not charge consumers for patches.”
A post on the NeoGAF forums by Absinthe Games founder Jack Sipich also confirmed that developers “are not allowed to charge you for patches or [PS4 Pro] feature updates.”
This is very good news. The original report came from Kotaku who cited Japanese website Game Impress Watch who interviewed Sony Interactive Entertainment exec Masayasu Ito, and according to the translation Ito was quoted as saying, “It will be different for each title. I believe it will depend on the thinking of each licensee,” when asked about whether or not the HDR patch could cost money or be free. So there was obviously some confusion, but now it is cleared up. The HDR patch will be free.
