Sony is developing wireless charging technology that will cut charging times in half, according to Japan’s Nikkei. The technology is due in the second half of 2014 and will dramatically reduce the time for wirelessly charging a device. I think we can all appreciate that, since we have such busy lives and are always in a hurry. It will take the time down to around one hour. Sony can achieve this by being able to successfully conduct electricity at 10-15 Watts, double the amount current wireless chargers offer.
This new device will fall under the latest Wireless Power Consortium international Qi standard. Others like Nokia and Samsung have developed wireless charging for their devices under the Qi branding, although it is not expected that these devices will be compatible with the new technology. However, future Sony devices will likely support the new format and be backwards compatible with the older standard at the same time.
We won’t have too long to wait for this new technology. The second half of 2014 isn’t that far away after all. You will probably get yourself one before Christmas of next year if all goes well. Fast charging. We could use more of that.
