Sony’s PlayStation 4 has continued to sell well. In fact, it just hit the 70 million consoles sold milestone. It moved past 60 million systems in June and 50 million a year ago.
These numbers tell us that Microsoft’s cheaper Xbox One S and powerful Xbox One X released last month haven’t really hurt Sony’s console sales. Sony is doing just fine. In fact the PSVR has moved 2 million units since it launched in fall 2016. That’s pretty impressive.
Until now, we haven’t really had any numbers to show us how successful Sony’s VR headset has been. The device is a cheaper mid-grade option between top desktop computer VR systems and cheaper smartphone-based units. The PSVR uses the PS4 and more powerful PS4 Plus. The PSVR broke 1 million units sold last June.
Interestingly, the PSVR took almost 50 percent of the million VR units sold in Q3 2017. This beats out the Oculus Rift’s 21 percent share and HTC Vive’s 16 percent cut. So as you can see this news means that the PSVR is selling very well indeed. The PSVR has sold almost 10 million games for the system even though there is really no must-have game. It will be interesting to see how many more it sells.
