This would be a great April Fool’s Day prank, but it is serious science and could be used in all kinds of military applications.
Cockroaches can get into all kinds of small places and they are amazing survivors. That makes them ideal to remote control and use as zombies. North Carolina State University researchers, led by electrical engineering assistant professor Alper Bozkurt, are molding a commercially-available chip that could be mounted on a cockroach, along with a wireless receiver, transmitter, and controller.
The result is a controllable cockroach that can serve as spy, explosive carrier or anything else you can think up. The controller would, in theory, manipulate the roach’s antenna and sensory organs to force it to move how you want just like a remote-control car.
