When you think about the delicate act of picking flowers you generally don’t think of robots. Most lack the soft touch necessary to do it and are more apt to crush the flower than pluck it from the stem gently.
Researchers have created a new soft robotic arm made from flexible plastic. It uses three compartmentalized air channels to achieve a snake-like range of movement. It has such a light touch, it can pick flowers without damaging them. This is great for all kinds of fragile objects.
The researchers have experimented by adding cameras, suction cups and even syringes to the tip. They would want to scale it down, but alas, the air channels prevent that. For the moment.
