A few weeks ago a woman was assaulted and robbed in an incident that came from opposition to her wearing Google Glass at a bar. That area was not really a tech-friendly place, so you can understand what happened even if you can’t excuse their actions. However, The Willows is a bar located in SoMa, which is a very tech-centric area of downtown. That bar has decided to ban Glass as well.
It was due to patron’s “concern with being recorded while enjoying themselves” and they have posted a sign with a picture of Google Glass and a red circle with a big slash through the center. As in No Google Glass. The establishment is private, so they can do what they like.
It is interesting to watch the Glass controversy unfold. What about someone who comes into this bar with a prescription set of Glass? All they can really do take their business elsewhere. So maybe we will see “Glass bars” spring up at some point where they can all be free to wear Glass with no hassles. Or have Glass safe zones in our cities?
You would think that this bar, being in such a tech friendly part of town, would allow Glass. And this is very telling. It seems to suggest that even normally open-minded, tech-friendly folks would rather have their privacy than the device around them.
