Pokemon Go is having some unintended consequences. As Pokémon Go introduces many people to location-based gaming, some of these people are being introduced to the potential pitfalls of location based gaming.
Police in O’Fallon, Missouri report that robbers used the mobile game to lure victims. Apparently the thieves placed a lure at a Pokéstop (a location where you collect items) and waited for players to show up, becoming unwitting targets.
Police did catch the robbers, however. That’s great news. This is just the latest in a series of odd events since Pokémon Go launched. A young woman discovered a dead body after taking a walk by the river to catch Pokémon, and authorities have had to warn gamers against trying to enter police stations just to play as well. It looks like Nintendo and Niantic weren’t prepared for all of the consequences of encouraging so many players to hit the streets in search of Pokemon.
We wonder what we will see next with this popular game. So many people are playing it that we are bound to hear about more incidents like this in the future. Just be careful when playing and use common sense when you are doing so.
