Mojang has just confirmed that they have sold more than a million copies of Minecraft for the PS3 console. That’s a pretty impressive feat. The PS3 version of Minecraft was launched on the PlayStation Network on December 17th last year, with a $20 price tag.
This means that they have moved more than a million copies from retailers to the hands of gamers in a matter of about five weeks. Frankly that is pretty amazing. However it is nothing compared to the Xbox 360 version which sold over a million copies in just 5 days after it hit Xbox Live. The Sony PS3 version of Minecraft is the most recent cross-platform version of the game from Mojang, so these figures will increase of course. Additional versions of the game for newer platforms are already in the works. You can expect versions for the Sony PS4 or PS Vita too, very soon.
Mojang isn’t done with this franchise yet. It intends to develop a subscription service called Minecraft Realms, which is currently running in beta in Sweden. A full launch is expected later in 2014. There is a lot more money to be made from this title obviously.
