Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was supposed to begin production in January 2019 with a release scheduled for 2020. However according to a report from the Hollywood Reporter, it looks like production of the movie has been put on hold since presumably Disney and Marvel are now looking for a new director.
If you have missed everything that happened in the past month or so, the movie’s original director James Gunn was fired over tweets that he made. The tweets were offensive, which led to Disney letting the director go. The stars of the movie petitioned to get him back, but Disney is a family-friendly business, so no dice.
It looks like Disney has no plans on reversing their decision, so that is why which is why production has been put on hold while a new director is being found. We don’t know if this could mean that the movie could miss its target 2020 release date, but if they find someone soon, things could still stay on track.
Gunn’s script for the movie will still be used apparently. This means that while Gunn won’t be behind the camera, at least some of the writing magic that made the first and second Guardians of the Galaxy movies so successful will be used.
