It has had its share of delays and revisions, but the Atari VCS is a popular nostalgia machine. If you have been waiting to hear when you can buy it, we finally have that info. The retro console is available for general pre-order right now from both the company site and GameStop and Walmart. Orders from the last two should ship in March 2020, while crowdfunding backers might get theirs in December of 2019.
The base VCS 400, with an AMD processor, embedded Vega graphics and 4GB of RAM is $249. A VCS 800 with 8GB of RAM will be $279. The classic Atari-style joystick and more modern gamepad will cost $49 and $59. And buying an all-inclusive 800 model with both controllers will cost you $389.
It should be noted that the Atari 2600-inspired Black Walnut design seen here is only available directly from the company. GameStop is only selling the all-black model, while Walmart is offering an exclusive version with a Kevlar Gold front panel. It is much more expensive than the SNES Classic or PlayStation Classic. However, this is a 4K-capable machine that can play modern titles as well as vintage ones. Then there’s the nostalgia factor of course. Get those pre-orders in if you want one.
