Nintendo and Game Freak have been promising a real Pokémon role-playing game for the Switch since launch, and they’re almost ready to deliver it to us. They’ve now unveiled Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, the first entries in the core RPG franchise for Nintendo’s Switch.
The initial clips that have dropped don’t give much detail, but it looks like the classic top-down perspective is changed to a horizontal view. We can also expect a new region, Galar, and three new starter monsters: Grookee (a grass character), Scorbunny (fire) and Sobble (water).
This game is for both veteran players and newcomers. The title will arrive sometime in late 2019. We don’t know if the series will be a huge hit on the Switch, but there’s no doubt that fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival. There hasn’t been a release in the core series since Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon in 2017, and those were just “director’s cut” versions of the 3DS games
The Switch is a hot console and a new Pokémon game could keep that momentum going for Nintendo for quite a while yet. It will be interesting to see how the game is greeted by fans when it arrives later this year.
