If you have ever used your phone roaming abroad, you know that you can easily rack up thousands of dollars in charges. Well, that’s what happened to an Olympic gymnast who couldn’t stop playing Pokemon Go.
Now he is paying for his addiction.
The $5,000 cellular bill that the gymnast received probably soured him on the whole Pokemon thing. Totally understandable. Kohei Uchimura is a gymnast with the Japanese Olympic team and he had a shocking bill. He got addicted to Pokemon Go and couldn’t stop playing it even as he landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the games. Obviously that isn’t a very good idea.
He didn’t know that his cellular connection did not include a flat rate for overseas usage. His teammate Kenzo Shirai told him about it after Uchimura saw his cellphone bill, which was ¥500,000 or $5,000. He “looked dead at the team meal that day.” I bet.
Uchimura’s carrier actually helped him out. He explained his situation to them and they decided to cut down his bill to ¥3,000 which comes out to just short of $30. Probably because he is an Olympian. He will certainly be more careful next time he travels and plays a game like this.
