I think it’s safe to say that 3D did not take off the way that many thought it would. NVIDIA has noticed this as well. The graphics chip designer has unveiled plans to drop support for 3D Vision, its approach to gaming with 3D glasses. And so, the last drivers to support 3D Vision will come with the final Release 418 in April, with future versions dropping it completely.
You’ll still get support for “critical driver issues” in 418 through April 2020, but that’s it. Other software is also affected. NVIDIA’s tool for running games on 3D TVs, 3DTV Play, is now bundled with the Release 418 drivers for free. The 3D Vision Video Player app will only be available through the end of 2019 for free.
The company didn’t explain the decision to pull 3D Vision, but with low adoption and dwindling resources, this is what typically happens. Stereoscopic 3D glasses are not popular anymore. Especially when there are more affordable VR headsets. Besides, NVIDIA recently launched a new graphics architecture with ray tracing and other distinctive features that need their own support.
Hopefully, you enjoyed the 3D fad while it lasted. Now Nvidia is moving on to greener pastures that will pay off more.
