As you may or may not know, Pinterest’s visual search tool isn’t ready to come out of beta just yet, but the company is giving a lot more people the chance to try it out.
The new feature is called Lens, and the good news is that it is now open to all Android and iOS users in the US. This comes after a month-long trial with a small group of testers.
Lens is basically the app’s version of reverse image search. It makes it so that you can easily shop for items on Pinterest by taking their photos. For instance, maybe you want to look up your friend’s vase that’s shaped like an upside-down human head. Just tap the search bar and take a photo of it using the camera icon that pops up. You can also use any image from your gallery. Your search will show you other people’s pins and products you can purchase from inside the app. Even the company admits that the feature isn’t as accurate as it would like it to be, but it is something new anyway. The search is still in the process of learning, so we can expect it to get better.
