According to a recent report from Japan, Nintendo may be planning to use Android for its next gaming console, currently codenamed NX. But as it turns out, the company doesn’t have any plans regarding Android. Not right now at least.
The Wall Street Journal has word from a Nintendo spokesman that “there is no truth to the report” claiming that the NX would run Android. So there goes that rumor. Not gonna happen.
So it won’t be based on Android, but the next Nintendo console needs to bring something new and exciting to the market, otherwise why bother? Sales of Nintendo’s current console, the Wii U, fell behind Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. Some would say that the Wii U “alienated software developers”, so a new Android-based console would have made sense, since Google’s platform attracts a huge number of developers who can create content for any type of device. What they will do instead is anyone’s guess, but it won’t be Android.
The Nintendo NX should be launched in 2016, so they have time to formulate their strategy. They will have to win some hearts and minds back as well as take on competitors. That isn’t going to be easy.
