The Wii U has been pretty unpopular, so it was a bit of a surprise when Nintendo announced that it was discontinuing production of the original Nintendo Wii in Japan. Naturally, this made us wonder if the discontinuation of production in Japan would affect availability within the US. The answer is no.
The announcement that the Wii was being discontinued was related to Japan only. A spokesperson from Nintendo of America has clarified that availability for the Nintendo Wii in the US won’t be affected at all, so Wii fans in the US need not be worried.
The Nintendo Wii currently sells for $130 for a bundle with Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. The original Nintendo Wii was a super popular game console when it first launched, selling over 100 million units around the world. At that time, people couldn’t get them fast enough. Sadly, it didn’t maintain its early popularity and sales declined. The new Nintendo Wii U has been unpopular from nearly the beginning. Some estimates suggest that Nintendo only sold 160,000 units in Q2 of 2013. Personally, I think that the only way they can get back on track is to build a new console and start over again.
