As we’ve talked about before, Nintendo is in a bad place right now. They need some good sales of the Wii U. DS games, customer rewards, and new titles are doing their part, but a hardware price drop is not in the cards for at least a year.
At $300 the Wii U is already cheaper than the PS4 and Xbox One, but at the same time it is viewed as a kiddie console, not in the same league at all. Reducing the price further could boost sales. However, Iwata says that isn’t going to happen. At least not in this coming financial year, which ends in March 2015. Since it costs so much for them to make, any price drops would end up costing them money.
Iwata believes that Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. will be the system sellers Nintendo needs, although that seems like wishful thinking. He thinks that because they are strong multiplayer games they will encourage existing players to get their friends to buy the Wii U.
I think they need a whole new vision and a commitment to quality games. Two games alone aren’t going to help much.
