We already have some “instant on” options, but they are hardly instant. The good news is that we are getting closer. An updated Samsung Chromebook recently shown off at IDF in Beijing, can do a cold boot in just five seconds. Now that’s fast and much closer to “instant”.
That time is very impressive. especially when you consider that current generation Chromebooks like the Samsung Series 5 and Acer AC700 take about eight or nine seconds to boot. This was accomplished with an updated processor (likely a Sandy Bridge chip) a Coreboot tweak, and a Linux-based replacement for the proprietary BIOS options from companies like Award and AMI.
It won’t be long now until we all have super quick boot times. Sleep mode will be a thing of the past.
