Not everyone likes to enjoy big blockbuster movies on the big screen. Some people prefer streaming them from the comfort of their own home. Well, if you wanted to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens at home through a streaming service, you are sadly out of luck. Unless you are in Canada.
Netflix tells Variety that the timing of its Disney deals will only let it stream the new Star Wars movie in Canada, eight months after it leaves theaters. The service’s Canadian Disney agreement covers movies released in 2015 onward, which includes The Force Awakens. In the US, you’re stuck with movies debuting in 2016 or later. I wouldn’t hold out for UK availability either, when even Disney’s own streaming service won’t have Star Wars movies.
There is one silver lining with this news if you aren’t Canadian. Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos mentioned talks to add the franchise’s previous movies when discussing his company’s latest earnings. So anything before The Force Awakens. Hopefully. Good news for Canadians, not so great news for the rest of us. It might be a good time to make sure that your passport is in order. Maybe you can go visit some friends and watch it.
